SWARMS!

In the spring and early summer, strong colonies of bees will swarm.  This is normally an impressive sight, but not dangerous.  What is happening is that the old queen has left an established hive and taken about half of the bees with her.  In a few days, new queen(s) will emerge from special cells and fight for control of the hive.  The swarming bees will form a ball with the queen in the middle and send out scouts to find a suitable cavity in which to form a new hive. This normally takes from 15 minutes to 3 days.  During this transition time, swarming bees are less likely to sting because they do not have a home to defend.  If you are close to Lawrence Kansas and see a swarm, please contact us.  We love to capture these bees because they normally have genetic traits that have allowed them to thrive in the wild without intervention by beekeepers.  A nominal charge of $25.00 to cover gas and mileage will be assessed.  No further charging will occur since mostly, we want the bees.  BEEware of people that advertise swarm removal and ask for high fees and/or use scare tactics.  Call us for facts before you spend your hard-earned money on what may be a scam.

Once the swarming bees find a home and move in, removing them is much more difficult.  The queen and nurse bees will not leave the brood area in the center of the hive.  This means that the hive will quickly build back up even if a large number of bees are removed. Normally bees that move into hollow trees or the exteriors of building are harmless and should just be tolerated.  In some cases, however, safety dictates that the bees need to be removed.  This often requires some construction work cutting down all or part of a tree.  If you can find someone to do that work for you, then we will gladly remove the bees for no charge except $25.00 to cover our gas and mileage expenses.  Again, please beware of over-charges and fear tactics.
